Why Hollow Lantern is worth an evening

Why Hollow Lantern is worth an evening

June 27, 2026 · Marta Kowalczyk

I went into Hollow Lantern expecting a pretty but forgettable little adventure. Instead I got something that lingered for days. It's short and gentle, but it says more with a dimming streetlamp than a lot of games manage with hours of cutscenes.

There's almost no hand-holding, and I mean that as praise. You tap around, notice things, and the puzzles grow naturally out of what you observe. Nothing here is designed to trap you in a wiki search, which felt refreshing.

If you get stuck, the fix is nearly always to revisit a place you rushed through. Slow down. The game rewards looking rather than doing, and the pace is the whole point.

I won't touch the ending, but I'll say it recontextualizes a couple of earlier moments in a way I genuinely didn't expect from a mobile game. Play it in one or two sittings, at night, with headphones.
